Beauty of Livermere (papaver orientale)
This perennial oriental poppy comes back bigger every year producing
more amazing flowers each season. The deep red and black flowers are
up to 6 inches across and offer a stunning contrast to the dark
black centers and deep purple and silver tipped stamens. The flowers
last for two weeks or more on the plant. Beauty of Livermere is very
tolerant of harsh winter temperatures and is one of the first
plants to emerge in the spring. Blooms appear in the late spring or
early summer and reach a height of 28 to 36 inches.
Sow seeds in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked.
Plant at 1/8 inch deep and cover lightly. Keep the soil moist and germinations
should take place in 14-21 days. Best when spaced 12 inches or more
apart as the clumps grow bigger each season. Poppies prefer
full sun and require little water once established.
