Iztepeque 589, also called Costa Rica 589, is a primitive Costa Rican cigar type. The original seed stock was acquired by the USDA in 1936. It's growth habit and plant form resemble that of Turkish varieties such as Black Sea Samsun. The leaves are a medium green and have a glossy appearance when mature. The leaves air cure to a light brown. Well aged leaf is flavorful, and has a ginger like spiciness to it. Iztepeque is excellent as a pipe tobacco or a cigar filler. PI 114370 |
