Hungarian Blue (papaver somniferum)
Hungarian Blue poppy produces flowers up to 4-5 inches across in a
beautiful deep shade of purple. The center of the flower has a
cross of dark blue black color running half way up the opposing petals, The
dark color of the petals often make the yellow and green centers stand
out. The Hungarian Blue poppy is a Bread Seed type poppy and produces
large dark colored black and gray seed which are used on baked goods and
breads. It is long blooming and produces an abundance of flowers over
several weeks. This beautiful annual poppy is easy to grow and can
reseed itself returning year after year.
Sow seeds in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked.
Poppies will tolerate lights frosts. Plant at 1/8 inch deep and cover lightly. Keep the soil moist and germinations
should take place in 14-21 days. Thin to 8-12 inches. Poppies prefer
full sun and require little water once established.
