Calendula ( calendula
officinalis ) Sometimes called the English Marigold,
this beautiful little jewel of a plant has an exceptional long lasting
flowering season. It will flower all summer long and well into the
fall until a hard frost occurs. With single and double flowers of
bright orange and golden yellow, it endears itself to most people. It
can be planted in a variety of places like tubs, planters, rock
gardens, formal gardens and are great for that 'English country
garden' look. It is widely cultivated and can be grown easily in sunny
locations in most kinds of soils. This plant will willingly re-seed
itself and is frost tolerant. It is also resistant to Deer. Calendula is an annual or short-lived herbaceous perennial (if
grown in warmer zones) growing from 1 to 3 feet tall.
Calendula contains high amounts of flavonoids which are plant-based
antioxidants that protect the body against cell-damaging free
radicals. Researchers are not sure what active ingredients in
calendula are responsible for its healing properties, but it appears
to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial effects.
Flowers were used in ancient Greek, Roman, Middle Eastern and Indian
cultures as a medicinal herb as well as a dye for fabrics, foods and
cosmetics.
