Siberian Pea Bush/Tree (Caragana arborescens)
The Siberian Pea Bush is a medium to fast growing perennial shrub. A member of legume family, the leaves are alternate and compound with small leaflets and can be light to dark green. Small yellow fragrant flowers bloom in early summer with pod fruits containing many seeds, that ripen in mid summer.
A deciduous shrub growing to 20 feet in height by 15 feet in width at a fast rate. This plant makes a great hedge or windbreak, and is deer resistant. It prefers a well-drained soil. Suitable for light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils, and can grow well in nutritionally poor soil. Preferring full sun, established plants are drought resistant. Siberian Pea Bushes are hardy to
-25°F, they prefer a continental climate and do well in areas with cold winters.
Siberian Pea Bush seeds have a hard seed coat and require pretreatment for successful germination to occur. A seed pretreatment is usually necessary to make the seed coat permeable so that the seed embryo can take up water and begin to germinate.
One method is to place the seeds in a container and pour warm (not boiling!) water over them and leave them to soak for between 12-24 hours. Seeds that have been successfully pretreated will have swollen to around 2-3 times their previous size. Remove all swollen seeds as these will be damaged by further pretreatments. These can be sown immediately. This warm water treatment can be repeated up to 3 times. Seeds that have swelled should be ready to germinate and will take 3-4 weeks in temperatures of 65f
