Queensland Blue Squash (Cucurbita maxima)
This winter squash was introduced to
the U.S. in 1932. A beautiful blue 10-12 lb. fruit. Most
fruits are the classic rounded turban shape. This superb keeper
from Australia has thick, gray-green skin, deep ribbing, and sweet
orange flesh that is wonderful for baking, soups, pies, cakes and
muffins. The vigorous 6 - 8 feet vines need a lot room to roam so
must be planted at least 24 - 36" in rows 4 feet apart. They
will on average take 7 - 12 days to germinate. It is a tender
annual that is very easy to grow. It loves full sun and needs
moderate watering.
Harvest
when vines have begun to die back and fruit has reached its full
size and final color. Cut fruit from vines leaving a 1-2 inch stem
for good storage. Store at 50-55°F in a dry place. Bring in
before the first frost to avoid chilling damage that reduces
storability.
