Snow's Fancy Pickling
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus)
Plant
produces good yields of 5" long by 1 ½" wide pickling type
cucumbers. These cucumbers have a nice sweet crunch to them and are great
making pickles and for salads too. Pick the fruits as soon as large enough to encourage more
fruiting.
Sow seeds in
full sun when soil temps are at least 70F . Requires
fertile soil in a well drained location in the garden.
Sow about 1 inch
to 1 ½ inches deep. Plant in rows 4-5 feet apart in hills spaced 3 feet. Thin hills to
3 or 4 plants each. The
soil should be
kept moist. Water well during dry and hot spells.
Cucumbers like hot weather and plenty of water. Make sure plants get ½"
water per week. 50 -
60 days until maturity.
This variety was introduced in 1905 by Vaughan’s Seed House
of Chicago. It was selected by J. C. Snow of the famous Snow Pickle Farm
located in Rockford, Illinois. At that time, it fit the requirements for
small pickling manufacturing.
