Kajari Melon This is a rare and unusual melon
from India, and is believed to have originated in the Punjab region. It has
dark green stripes that turn a deep orange as it ripens making it a real
eye catcher in the garden and at farmers markets. The flesh is a medium green
to light yellow with a taste very similar to a honeydew. Some describe it as
having a hint of summer apple.
Plant seeds in full sun after the danger of frost has
passed. Sow seeds at a depth of 1/2" in groups of 3-4 seeds,
spaced 3-4 feet apart in each direction. The fruits average between
2-3 lbs and start maturing in 70-80 days, making it a good choice for growers
with short seasons. The orange stripes appear as the melons ripen and the fruit will
slip from the stem when fully ripe. Each plant will produce from 6-8
melons.
Any unripe melons can be picked after the first frost and
they will continue to ripen in storage. Kajari melons have a long shelf life
especially if refrigerated. The delicious flavor, good production, short
growing season, and long shelf life, give Kajari's an excellent potential as a
market melon. And a great addition to any home garden.
