Bozeman Watermelon ( citrullus lanatus )
Developed in Bozeman Montana for short season growing areas,
this light green watermelon has a speckled smooth skin.
The slightly pear-shaped fruit are large for such an early melon,
averaging 10-15 lbs with larger ones up to 18 lb. It has a very good flavor with
a thick pink-red flesh, and with few seeds.
Matures in only 80-90 days and keeps for up to a
month after picking. The Bozeman watermelon is
an excellent choice for northern gardeners and for commercial growers
as a short season market melon.
Plant seeds directly in the soil 1/2 inch deep in hills
spaced 2-3 feet apart after all danger of frost has passed. Thin to
2-3 plants per hill. Or start in pots 3-4 weeks before last spring
frost for an even earlier harvest. Watermelons like well fertilized
soil and lots of water during the hot summer months.
