Purple Lupine (Lupinus)
This Lupine is native to western North America and is a
hardy perennial member of the legume family. It is commonly used in
gardens for its tall beautiful flowers, attractiveness to bees, and
ability to improve poor sandy soils by fixing nitrogen. They are also
deer resistant.
The tall spiked flower stems reach 2-3 feet in height, and are
a rich purple color. The Lupine plant can reach a spread of 3ft wide.
Lupines have soft green leaves. The leaf blades are usually palmately
divided into five to 10 leaflets. This plant is a beautiful, tall,
eye-catching addition to any garden.
They are very hardy plants, surviving extreme temperatures
withstanding cold temperatures to 15 °F (−25 °C) or
more.
